Simple Scraper - Patent Pending

Here at Simple Woodturning Tools, we wanted to simplify removing tool marks and produce a simpler way to shear scrape a perfect flat finish. We wanted a simpler way to get that smooth buttery finish on our work pieces and to reduce sanding to a minimum. Scrapers are certainly not new to the turning world however we wanted a scraper that would be simple to use, arrive sharp and stay sharp for a long time. Thus, the carbide Simple Scraper was born.

We started with a solid piece of stainless steel for the tool body, gave it a flat wide base with rounded bottom corners which allows the tool to be used in a shear scrape while maintaining positive tool support from the tool rest. There’s no balancing the tool on a square corner to achieve a shear scrape. The nice wide, flat surface on the bottom of the tool allows you to quickly orient the tool from a normal scraping cut to an unstoppable shearing cut in one turn of the wrist. This Simple Scraper is primarily a shaping and finishing tool offering you the ability to achieve a smooth surface that will need very little sanding.

There are 4 different cutters for this scraper:

  1. Rectangle insert- This cutter shined on the outside of bowls, hollow forms, vases, platers, and wooden pen blanks. We also love it for simple spindle work too. Another place you’ll love this cutter is on the inside of a box.
  2. Rectangle negative rake insert- Like the rectangle insert but the negative rake grind makes this cutter less aggressive. This reduces chipping in very hard materials, can reduce tear out in softer materials and provides a great finish in both man-made materials and harder woods. Because the negative rake grind is less aggressive, many people find it easier to use.
  3. Oval insert- This cutter really stands out on the inside of bowls and spindle work with larger coves. It is still fabulous for the outside of your other work pieces too.
  4. Oval negative rake insert- Like the oval insert but the negative rake grind also makes this cutter less aggressive. This reduces chipping in very hard materials, can reduce tear out in softer materials and provides a great finish in both man-made materials and harder woods. Because the negative rake grind is less aggressive, many people find it easier to use.
